🎬 Imitation of Life
1959 ‧ Romance/Melodrama/Drama ‧ 2h 5m

📜 Storyline
After a chance encounter on a crowded Coney Island beach, struggling white aspiring stage actress Lora Meredith takes in Annie Johnson, a homeless Black widow, and her light-skinned daughter, Sarah Jane. As the years unfold, Lora achieves glamorous Broadway stardom at the cost of emotional distance from her growing daughter, Susie. Meanwhile, Annie endures devastating heartbreak as Sarah Jane desperately attempts to pass for white, cutting ties with her mother to escape racial prejudice. Balancing opulent mid-century melodrama with profound social commentary, the film builds toward a heartbreaking confrontation over identity, maternal sacrifice, and unconditional love.
