Being surrounded by so many people means that sometimes, the struggles go beyond training.

Sometimes people say hurtful things or underestimate your skills. But I wonder if learning to overcome these situations is also part of jiu-jitsu.

Standing on the mat, believing in yourself without letting other people’s opinions or judgments define you.

My jiu-jitsu skills are still pretty terrible. But I believe my skills reflect where I am right now, at my current belt and stripe level. Even if I feel like the least skilled person in the room, I have nothing to be ashamed of.

In fact, I think it’s pretty amazing that I can cheer for those who are better than me, appreciate their talent and hard work, and genuinely celebrate their progress.

There are days when my body doesn’t keep up with my efforts, and it gets frustrating. But I don’t stay in that frustration for too long. I can’t always give it my all, so sometimes I just need to take a little break and give myself time to rest.

Whether we train or not, life will always bring us difficult situations.

When that happens, I tend to face my problems head-on. Rather than letting my emotions take over, I try to look at things rationally and realistically.

Even if the outcome is a complete disaster, I have nothing to be ashamed of. I can always start again.

I may not be able to start my entire life over, but I can always begin something new in this very moment.

I can try again after failing, keep learning despite my shortcomings, and take a break when I’m exhausted before moving forward again.

I know how beautiful that is.

I’d love to hear your story, too.

What’s something jiujitsu has taught you about yourself?

A evolução é lenta.
