Got a few thousand American miles just sitting there? You can finally put them toward a regular ticket.
American now lets you mix cash and miles on aa.com and in the app. Search like normal (don't tick "Redeem miles"), pick your flight, then use the slider at checkout to choose how many miles to use. You need at least 500 miles and a US address on your AAdvantage account.
The catch: it's only for American flights within the lower 48. No basic economy, no Alaska or Hawaii, no international, no partner flights. And if your plans change, you have to cancel and rebook.
Is it a good deal? TPG estimates about 1 cent per mile, which is less than you'd usually get from a normal award. So it's great for clearing out a small balance, but if you're saving for a big trip, book a regular award instead.
What would you do with a leftover stash of miles?
