Speed Lesson: Curvilinear Sprinting—Manage the Radius
Concept: A tighter curve requires greater inward force, which usually means more braking and a larger drop in speed. Athletes should not attack every arc at the same velocity; the goal is to match speed to the radius so they can maintain efficient posture and exit with usable momentum.
Drill/cue: Set two curved sprint lanes with different radii—one wide and one tight—and have the athlete sprint each for 10–15 yards. Cue: “Adjust your speed to the curve, not after it.”
Application question: Are your curved sprint drills teaching athletes to regulate speed before entering the arc, or only reacting once they begin to lose balance?
