ARTisinal Mining in Ghost Towns.

CAMP held a Cultural Worker Lab (CWL) in collaboration with @mirko.earthling to open conversation and engagement around negative transnational impacts of public finance from the global north. Building messaging through transdisciplinary research, art making, and poetry grounded in place-specific impacts and forms of resistance.

Transnational mining companies are thieves and cause so much damage to our land across the world.Their insatiable hunger for capital and the pillaging of the earth for minerals can be mapped all over the globe, resulting in an increase of mining affected communities/sacrifice zones in low income areas of all countries.

Through laws and diplomatic collaborators, these mining companies get state priority while people are displaced from their homes, pushed far from any proximity of meaningful work or living conditions. Townships are targeted for land and cheap labour, with unequal distribution of energy and resources. What gets left behind by these companies is non-rehabilitated land, polluted water bodies with a grey, deadly smelling air, and a community left to fend for itself.

The demand for just energy transition should target existing inequalities and wealth (re)distribution —challenging how mining companies get away with so much on the basis that they are mining 'legally' while indigenous artisanal miners are ridiculed and scapegoats for the already unequal dynamics in the mining and economic sector.
