The ford is open! Once again, visitors can access the Mason Farm Biological Reserve by driving through Morgan Creek behind Finley Golf Course. This access point had been closed since Tropical Storm Chantal fundamentally changed the flow of the creek in July 2025. A lot of time and effort went into making this crossing safe, and we are excited to offer easier access to this local wildlife haven and birdwatching gem. A permit is required to visit: sign up at https://ncbg.unc.edu/visit/mason-farm-biological-reserve And be sure to check the water level of the ford to make sure it is safe to cross when you visit! The pump in the photograph reads $3.139 for unleaded, $25.20 for 8.029 gallons. That is the price worth defending, and it is not the price most Americans paid on Election Day. The national average for regular gasoline stood at $4.15 a gallon on November 3, according to AAA, $1.11 higher than a year earlier and the highest Election Day average on record in nominal dollars. California averaged $5.89. The cheap pump in the photograph is the exception. The expensive average is the rule. Prices did not climb by accident. Crude oil has stayed above $100 a barrel, and the war with Iran that began in late February pushed the Midwest average from $2.76 in the last week before the fighting to the $4 range by Election Day. Refineries have closed, maintenance has piled up, and every gallon carries the cost of a world market that no single governor can control. Drivers felt it at the pump before they felt it in any speech. Affordability decided the midterms, and gasoline was the number on every dashboard. The party that just took Congress has spent years writing the rules that make gasoline dearer. California wrote a rule to end sales of new gas-only cars by 2035, eight other states followed, and Los Angeles banned new oil and gas drilling outright in late October. Those are not accidents either. They are the plan: fewer wells, fewer refineries, fewer gas cars, higher prices, and a lecture about the climate for anyone who objects. Staying home on Election Day did not keep the pump at $3.139. It handed the pen to the people who want that price gone.
