1/ Frieze London: 'Feral Metaverse (Spider)' Theo Triantafydillis' six-legged arachnoid sculpture with a multi-screen video game inserted in its body, which secured the Frieze London Artist Award.
The aim is to explore collaboration, cooperation and care in a gaming setting by bringing players together to ride a leg and rescue a group of avatars from a giant cloth spider that keeps foiling their escape by toppling the human tower they were engaged in making.
I can't say I noticed much interaction going on when I sat down but I plunged in, pulled a lever and pressed Button A multiple times and moved my bikinied avatar towards the centre. 'I've no idea what I'm doing,' I told the roaming facilitator. 'But you're doing really well. You're almost there. Press button A.' I pressed it and everyone looked up. Game over. This Spider rider vanquished the spider. Where's my duster?
2/ Frieze Masters: 'Portrait of a Woman (Margaret Thompson, née Dismorr)' 1919-20 by Jessica Dismorr.
The artist was one of only two women who were founding signatories of the Vorticist Group (the other was Helen Saunders, who was exhibited at The Courtauld in 2023).
Jessica's sister & subject of this painting rescued a lot of her work from being thrown out. Beneath this pewter-clad woman is an unfinished landscape.
3/ Lullington Church, one of the littlest churches in England, which I visited yesterday. This church appears in a video game called Disco Elysium, with soundtrack by indie group, Sea Power, who wrote a song about the church, now adapted for the game.
Lullington is near Alfriston, where Jessica Dismorr had a studio.
4/Wild card: Araignee, the eight-legged spider queen marionette, for whom I will write a rock musical - one day.
