One of the really special instruments used in my new record, Times Undoing & Progress, is the Buchla Touché – a rare, polyphonic keyboard instrument designed by Donald Buchla and @davidrosenboom in the late 1970s – I recorded snippets of sound explorations during my visits to the buchla_archives, and then used those as sample material throughout the record.

My favorite part of this instrument is how it straddles the line between familiar/unfamiliar - the keyboard interface feels like something I know (and have expectations of), but the sound generation can be so wild and unpredictable (completely blowing those expectations away). To me, it invites a kind of chaos and playfulness into the mix, and it keeps me in the curious ‘what if?’ state of mind that I absolutely love.

I’ll be sharing a more in-depth behind the scenes video in the coming weeks of how I did a lot of the electronic sound design on this record, and more about the different instruments used 👀

If you have any questions you want me to answer in the video, let me know below!

👏. What’s your vision of the différence between westcoast and eastcoast modular synthesis?
