“Ozempic mouth” is a real cluster of complaints but it’s not a proven diagnosis just yet. The biggest study so far, 226,000 GLP-1 users, found no rise in cavities or gum disease, however reflux did go up. More studies will come but for now that’s one of the biggest oral worries with this drug.
The three things we see according to the studies and data:
1. Dry mouth. GLP-1 receptors sit in your salivary glands. Less saliva, less protection.
2. Taste changes. In a study of nearly a million people, GLP-1 users were about 50% more likely to notice one. Still uncommon.
3. Reflux. Acid on your teeth at night. Rinse, and wait an hour before brushing. Xylitol gums, fluoridated toothpaste, hydration are key.
