Accountability has finally arrived at the Pentagon. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth removed Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia after the general admitted leaking classified details on Iran and Ukraine operations to reporters over the course of a year.

Sylvia, who oversaw strategy and planning for the Joint Staff, shared sensitive information through encrypted messages and in-person meetings. He failed multiple polygraph examinations before the case was referred for potential prosecution. Unauthorized disclosures of this kind put American forces and strategic advantages at risk during active conflicts.

Restoring discipline means ending the pattern of senior officers treating classified material as currency for media relationships. The military cannot operate effectively when its most sensitive plans reach the press before they reach the chain of command.
