Comment “NOMAD” to run AI without WIFI on your laptop
Project NOMAD turns a spare computer into an offline server with a local AI assistant, all of Wikipedia, medical references, maps and courses. Here is how to install it while you are online, what hardware the AI needs, and a lighter option if you only want offline chat.
To use AI offline, you run an open-weight language model on your own computer instead of a cloud service like ChatGPT.
Project NOMAD, a free, open-source project from Crosstalk Solutions, sets that up for you, along with offline Wikipedia, medical references, maps, Khan Academy courses and notes.
You install it on a Debian or Ubuntu computer while you are online, download a model and the content you want, and from then on it works without Wi-Fi or internet.
Phones and laptops on the same local network can use it through a browser, even with no internet connection.
