Wet belts can be easy to overlook. Unlike a conventional cambelt, which runs dry behind a cover, a wet belt runs inside the engine, bathed in oil. It can deteriorate from the inside out, so it may not be obvious what’s happening just by looking under the bonnet.

The manufacturer’s replacement interval matters, but a belt that’s nearing its due date, or any unusual noise from the front of the engine, is worth getting checked. If a wet belt fails, it can cause serious internal damage, including valves and pistons colliding. We’ve taken engines apart and seen the consequences.
