Running more isn’t the only way to become a better runner.
Strength training alongside running has been shown to improve running economy + performance — particularly when we include heavier loading, plyometric work, or a combination of training methods.
So when mileage drops, these are a few of the qualities we want to be building:
* single-leg strength — because running is a repeated single-leg task
* calf capacity — to prepare the calf complex for thousands of repeated contacts
* elastic capacity — plyometric work can help the muscle-tendon system store + return energy efficiently
* maximal strength — heavier strength training can improve running economy without simply adding more miles
None of these are magic exercises or a universal checklist.
They’re qualities we can build alongside your running to better prepare you for the demands of the sport.
The miles are only part of the training. Build what supports them.
