FRANCE ON EDGE

Rising living costs and strained public services have fuelled a protest movement bringing together students, trade unionists and Yellow Vest supporters.

Demonstrators are demanding better living standards and greater investment in education. While most marched peacefully, clashes, fires and looting broke out on the fringes of nationwide rallies.

The political standoff continues. Government talks with unions have produced no breakthrough, and labour groups are maintaining their call for a nationwide strike on November 5. Further student and Yellow Vest rallies are planned for Saturday, as authorities prepare reinforced security.

Local curfews have been imposed in parts of several cities. Paris police have also announced a ban on a planned Thursday demonstration.
