15 days agoThe Buffalo Evening News of March 4, 1903 reported: Waddell came here late in December to act as coach for the Rollins College baseball team. “Rube” put in days of strenuous life. He also made a record in baseball. Rollins played Ormond College [sic] and Waddell went onto the slab. He struck out the first man, gave the second his base on balls, then followed three strikeouts and a pop-up fly, all of which netted Ormond four runs. Odd record, wasn’t it? The trouble was caused by the Rollins catcher being unable to hold the third strike. The next inning “Rube” struck out the first two men, but on a muffed fly sent up by the third man both of the batsmen who struck out scored runs. This [was] too much for “Rube” and he went to second base. That night he wired for his old pal, Ossee Schreckengost, to come down here at once. With Schreck catching the Pennsylvania giant could pitch some and Rollins won the next game with Ormond by 1 to 0. Waddell says that he likes to pitch, but does not admire a catcher who will miss the third strike on him six times in two innings.
