Post 39 How I use 3D references without copying them ✨

For this one, I used a 3D face model to help me understand the angle, structure and placement of the features, but I didn’t try to reproduce everything exactly.

I mainly use the reference as a guide, then simplify, change proportions and make my own choices until the drawing feels more like my style. I’m still learning too, and exercises like this really help me understand what I’m looking at instead of just copying it

“Tracing” but they used the head shaped and filled in everything else with their own art

do people not understand that to learn how to draw you have to try copying things first and looking at things and try to replicate them repeatedly?

This is partially tracing using a 3D refrence isn't tracing, but drawing directly over its outlines or features would count as tracing. But either way why should it matter, its completely fine for artists to do it if it’s helping them with perspective just because you didn’t do it as a beginner artist doesn’t mean no one else did

This is awesome! What would you do when drawing a character with different proportions/shapes from the model?
