Ayrshire @britisharmy veteran, Ian Kerr, 67, will take part in SSAFA’s Warrior Challenge Lapland in January, completing a 25-kilometre trek across hostile Arctic terrain and raising funds for @ssafaofficial.

The grandad-of two from Irvine served for 10 years in the @royal_artillery, completing three tours of Northern Ireland and undertaking Arctic warfare training in Norway.

A keen sportsman who represented his regiment in boxing, rugby and athletics, Ian got into CrossFit after leaving service and now trains six days a week, alternating sessions between a specialist CrossFit gym and at home.

He said: "I love a challenge. You need these things to get you going at my age!

"I enjoyed my time in the military immensely. I have friendships and associations with people I would trust with my life because of it, and we have got to look after the people who follow behind us."

Ian is targeting £1,500 for SSAFA – the UK’s oldest national tri-service charity, and which supports serving personnel, veterans, and Forces families in their time of need. To donate, visit Ian’s online giving page.

Sarah Bewley, Senior Running Events Officer at SSAFA, said: "Warrior Challenge Lapland will be an adventure like no other; a real test of endurance, determination, and teamwork for those taking part and a chance to support SSAFA’s often life-changing work with the Armed Forces community.

"We’re so excited for this once in a lifetime challenge, set amid the jaw-dropping beauty of the Arctic Circle, and want as many people as possible to experience it. I’d encourage anyone who is interested to find out more – and look forward to welcoming those who are brave enough to the frozen wilderness of Lapland come January."
