Rotoskop is a kinetic light object built on a tensegrity structure (Jessen’s icosahedron). Six aluminium bars that do not touch one another are held in shape only by the tension of steel cables. Addressable LED strips run along the bars, and the whole structure rotates around a vertical axis.
The retina holds each point of light for a fraction of a second after it has moved on (persistence of vision). In rotation, each tilted bar therefore draws a hyperboloid surface of fine lines, and fragments of light remain visible where the bar was a moment ago. Inside the rotating object, two speakers face opposite directions and play sound generated in real time, carrying it around the space as the object turns. Visitors can influence the light and sound with their movement.
