In one of Manipur’s largest public demonstrations since ethnic violence erupted in 2023, over one lakh people reportedly took to the streets of Imphal on October 31, demanding an end to the prolonged conflict, justice for victims and the safe return of thousands of families displaced from their homes.

While local newspaper The Sangai Express estimated participation at over one lakh, other national media reports described the gathering as involving thousands, without independently confirming the higher figure.

The massive rally brought together members of the Meitei, Naga and other indigenous communities, with protesters marching through the streets carrying placards reading “Save Manipur” and “We Want Peace, Not Proxy War.”

Organised by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) alongside several Naga civil society organisations, the demonstration called for the immediate termination of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement between the government and Kuki militant groups.

Protesters accused the Centre of facilitating what they described as a “proxy war” against indigenous communities, an allegation made by the organisers rather than an independently established fact. They also demanded the withdrawal of Assam Rifles from certain areas, stronger security measures and the rehabilitation of displaced families.

The demonstration began at Tiddim Ground in Kwakeithel and culminated in a public gathering at THAU Ground in Thangmeiband. Similar rallies were reported in several hill districts, including Senapati and Chandel. Businesses and educational institutions remained closed in parts of Imphal, while security personnel were deployed along the protest route.

At the gathering, organisers adopted a six-point resolution demanding government accountability, the protection of indigenous communities and the removal of Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen. They also called for the state government’s resignation if their demands were not addressed.

The protests come amid renewed tensions and killings in a state that has struggled with ethnic violence, displacement and deep divisions since May 2023.
