Football is anygame played on foot (to distinguish between the horseback games played by the rich at the time) there were multiple games with different rules that developed in the UK about the same time all calling themselves football the word soccer forms from one of the games making ing the name association football (shortened to asoc then soccer by the brittish) while the game that came to the Americas formed 2 different games rugby football and American football (sorta the same game ngl) and when the brittish wanted to change the name back to just football from asoc/soccer Americans already had a national game called foorball so we kept soccer to avoid confusion
