There’s some good news I’ve been wanting to share.
Earlier this spring I was honored to be recognized by the Rema Hort Mann Foundation as the first recipient of its “Artist Living with Cancer” grant. Today is the foundation’s gala, where I’ll be honored, and over the past few weeks I’ve been grateful to see my work and this milestone featured in Artforum, Pin-Up, NY AM, and NOWNESS. I’m sharing these features as a way of marking how far I’ve come, both personally and in my practice.
After a long and difficult period of dealing with osteomyelitis, I’m finally beginning to feel like myself again. My studio practice is feeling full, and I’ve started making small sculptures. Being able to return to the work, even in a more limited capacity, has given me a sense of momentum that I’ve missed for a long time.
I’m not completely out of the woods yet. I continue to experience occasional flare-ups of inflammation and infection that require antibiotics, treatment, and ongoing occupational rehabilitation. These treatments can leave me physically destabilized and often mean staying home to recover. I can still make work in the studio, but I’m not yet able to sustain my practice and livelihood at full capacity.
I’ve felt genuinely nurtured by the people who have supported me through this. Your generosity has helped me navigate surgeries, treatment, rehabilitation, and the uncertainty of a recovery that has taken much longer than expected. I’m deeply grateful that I haven’t had to face all of this alone.
I’m asking for one more push of financial support to help me through these remaining months. I need to continue treatment, antibiotics, occupational rehabilitation, and the recovery-related expenses that allow me to keep making progress while gradually rebuilding my studio practice.
