@ben.wise and @kyleruth_coaching discuss the concept of lifting under fatigue. Which as you know if you’ve followed Jump Ship for any amount of time, is something I think athletes should take advantage of much more often.

There’s a time and a place to lift fresh, work on skill and technique, focus solely on the lifting session, etc. But for much of a CrossFitters training, and more specifically experienced CrossFitters and “competitors” - there is a ton to gain by being warm to the point of substantial fatigue.

CrossFitters have trained to recover at a very fast pace. They train to crossover energy systems likely better than any other style of training.

A little volume and intensity before a lift will only prep the CNS, increase quality ROM, and warm up motor patterns. Don’t be afraid of “being too tired”. Practice this enough and you’ll unlock another level.

I use ladder formats a lot for testing an athlete’s “functional max” in the Oly lifts. I this a lot less for slower lifts. Can’t wait to discuss this stuff more

I’d argue there’s a large mental component as well. When you’re fatigued, all the little voices in your head reminding you of certain cues are drowned out. Plus, the expectation to PR is gone as well. When you know you’re testing a 1RM after a dedicated training block the expectation to PR can be debilitating for some.
