Written in the final months of his life, Franz Schubert’s String Quintet in C Major, D. 956 stands among the most profound achievements in chamber music.
Completed in 1828, just weeks before Schubert’s death at the age of 31, the quintet was part of an extraordinary final burst of creativity. Remarkably, Schubert never heard the work performed, and it would be another 22 years before its public premiere.
Scored for two violins, viola, and two cellos, the quintet’s unusual instrumentation creates a rich, harmonic sound world that underpins the lyricism of Schubert’s melodic writing.
