For rock and blues musician Melinda Colaizzi, her life’s work bringing together women in music and women’s health research snapped into focus a decade ago, not long after she moved back to her hometown of Pittsburgh from Los Angeles.

Pretty quickly, she was asked to perform at a lot of shows, fundraisers and charity events. But something felt a little off to her, as she performed at showcase after showcase.

“I started to look around and question myself,” Colaizzi recalled. “Why was I the only woman on the lineup?”

She decided to organize a benefit concert featuring women artists, in support of women’s health research, Women Who Rock. Colaizzi’s movement led her to unraveling her own women’s health mystery, stage 4 endometriosis.

“I don’t think I would have ever known what endometriosis was unless I’d started Women Who Rock, because that really started to educate me in terms of the conditions that are not so mainstream,” Colaizzi said.
