We were watching four follicles before retrieval. We got three eggs, two were mature, and only one fertilized.

That drop-off is called attrition. Not every follicle yields an egg, not every egg is mature, and not every mature egg fertilizes. From there, an embryo needs to keep developing before it can potentially be tested, frozen, or transferred. Even then, a baby isn’t guaranteed.

There’s no single attrition rate that predicts everyone’s results. But when you start with so few, every drop feels enormous.

Now we wait to see whether our one fertilized egg continues developing. Knowing how this works doesn’t make the waiting any easier.
