DNA Evidence Links Suspect to Murdered Nurse in Caguas, Puerto Rico
CAGUAS, PUERTO RICO — DNA belonging to murder suspect Carlos Estefano Pino, 67, was found beneath the fingernails of Jennifer M. Torres Castro, a nurse who was killed in Caguas, according to forensic testimony presented Tuesday during a preliminary hearing.
Forensic analyst Kathleen Velázquez Sotomayor testified that DNA testing also identified genetic material from Pino on the bathroom sink faucet in the victim’s apartment.
However, a gynecological examination did not identify male genetic material that would establish whether a sexual assault had occurred, according to the evidence presented in court.
Torres Castro was killed on June 24 at a residence in the Río Cañas neighborhood, in the Quebrada Arenas sector of Caguas. Pino was subsequently arrested near the Barceloneta Outlets.
The preliminary hearing is scheduled to resume on November 23.
Questions Raised About Suspect’s Release From Prison
The case has also drawn attention to Pino’s criminal history and previous releases from prison.
According to Puerto Rico Corrections Secretary Francisco Quiñones, Pino was sentenced to 167 years in prison for a murder committed in 1980. However, he was released by the Puerto Rico Parole Board in 1989.
Two years later, he was returned to prison in connection with another woman's murder. He was released again in 2023 after reportedly meeting the applicable requirements.
Asked by Telenoticias about the decision to release him, Parole Board President Samuel Silva Rosas said there had been no positive drug test or reported behavioral problems.
“The law was not in place,” Silva Rosas said, referring to Law 85. “But the Board regained jurisdiction in 2016.”
The case continues to raise questions about the suspect’s criminal history and the decisions surrounding his release from prison as judicial proceedings move forward.
