A Jackson, #Mississippi, City Council meeting took a chaotic turn Tuesday (Nov. 3), forcing officials to call an hour-long recess after Councilman Kenneth Stokes got into a heated confrontation with protesters. According to WLBT, tensions erupted after Stokes, who represents Ward 3, introduced an ordinance to reverse a 183-day moratorium on data centers. Things quickly escalated when Stokes accused a protester of speaking about his mother, prompting him to declare, “I don’t fight women, and I never fight them, but I cut that b*tch out.” The exchange appeared to involve Candace Abdul-Tawwab, an outspoken opponent of #datacenters.

Stokes then turned his attention to Muslim protesters, telling them to “take the rags off your heads. Y’all are not Muslim.” Council President Vernon Hartley attempted to restore order as Councilwoman Tina Clay called for a recess. Several council members began walking out while audience members chanted “get him out.” The departing officials eventually returned so the meeting could be formally recessed.
