I started with Marge because she’s the most American mother ever drawn, endlessly feeding a family that never stops eating, while nobody asks what she’s hungry for.
I drew her in charcoal on raw canvas, her blue tower of hair splattering outward like appetite spilling over. Maggie creeps in from the side, one wide eye watching, because kids learn hunger before they learn words. Below it, the drawing collapses into knotted black scribbles: what consumption feels like from the inside, where you keep adding and somehow there’s less of you.
Red lines cut across everything like a butcher’s chart, portioning her into servings. Over her belly I pinned a sheet of yellow graph paper, the kind you’d do a budget on, and wrote “GLUTTON” in blue oil stick. We consume, images, and the cartoons we grew up on. I’m guilty too, feeding on Marge to make this.
