5 ways we're improving healthcare worldwide

Swipe to read about how we are tackling some of the biggest health challenges.
1. Collaborating across borders
on children’s cancer

NIHR-funded researchers in the UK and Japan are working together to find better treatments for cancers affecting children and young people.

By sharing expertise, ideas and research facilities, the partnership is supporting international clinical trials. It is helping more young people access innovative, life-saving treatments.
2. Tackling household air pollution
in Africa

The CLEAN-Air (Africa) project is a partnership between UK researchers and health authorities and institutions in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda and Cameroon.

The project is addressing the threat of household air pollution, improving health and reducing the harmful impact on the environment.
3. Making roads safer and saving lives

Thanks to the Global Road Safety Facility, road safety barriers were introduced on dangerous stretches of open road in Nepal. These barriers are estimated to have saved more than 3,000 lives.

Our Global Health Research Group has also helped Nepal improve how it records injuries, identifies dangerous roads, and strengthens emergency care.
4. Preventing HIV through couples testing

The WHO recommends couples HIV testing and counselling to reduce the risk of HIV transmission. Despite continued high levels of HIV prevalence, very few couples in South Africa have tested together.

42% of couples in the KwaZulu-Natal area agreed to test together after receiving NIHR-funded structured support and couples-based intervention.
5. The race to vaccine protection

Our research and clinical infrastructure have played a key role in developing new vaccines.

From pioneering the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine to advancing gamechanging immunisation against Malaria, typhoid and Ebola, our work has offered hope to millions around the world.
