On October 31, a 22-year-old woman, identified as Kajal, allegedly killed her stepfather, Rameshsinh Rajput, following an argument at their home in Surat’s Kosad Awas area. According to reports, the argument began after Ramesh scolded her over not helping with household chores and using her phone. He reportedly took her mobile phone and threw it on the floor. The confrontation then escalated, with Kajal attacking him with a cooker lid and a knife. Ramesh sustained serious injuries and later died. His wife, Manjuben, filed a complaint against her daughter. Kajal was arrested, and the police are investigating the incident. This is not the first time a conflict involving mobile phones has turned deadly in Surat. In 2021, a 17-year-old boy allegedly killed his father after being reprimanded for playing mobile games. In another incident that year, a 16-year-old girl died by suicide after her parents refused to give her back her phone. These were separate incidents, but they raise troubling questions about conflict within families. A phone, a disagreement, a moment of anger — and a family left dealing with an irreversible loss. Disagreements are a part of family life. But when anger takes over, the consequences can go far beyond the argument itself. Are we teaching young people how to deal with anger, rejection and frustration — or only telling them what they should and shouldn’t do? How do we learn to manage conflict before it reaches a point of no return?
