The Challenger #2 1945/46 by Interfaith Publications
Not really a Halloween book, but when you take a closer look at the cover, you can see that this book definitely has the creepy factor.
The Challenger 2 is an interesting book, particularly for collectors interested in World War II-era comics (like me), anti-fascist material, and the early career of Joe Kubert (of Sgt. Rock, Hawkman, etc, fame). What makes it stand out is its publisher’s mission of fighting racial prejudice, discrimination, and fascism through comic books. The series only lasted 4 issues from 1945–1946 by the poet and political activist Kenneth Leslie, who also published the magazine Protestant Digest. Unlike typical superhero or adventure comics of the era, The Challenger featured “uplifting stories” promoting tolerance, often through the lens of the titular “Challenger Club,” an anti-fascist organization.
This 4.5 is a mid-grade copy, with 18 in higher grade, of the 26 on the CGC census. Definitely a tough book to find. In fact, the entire series is a tough one to complete, with issue 1 (nn) having only 7 copies on the census! This copy was graciously passed along by
