This November, exhibitions across New York will show how richly varied sculpture can be in our present moment, from 15th-century Sienese bronzes to Beverly Buchanan’s site-specific memorials.
In 1979, at the start of her essay “Sculpture in the Expanded Field,” art critic and theorist Rosalind Krauss wrote: “Over the last ten years rather surprising things have come to be called sculpture: narrow corridors with TV monitors at the ends; large photographs documenting country hikes; mirrors placed at strange angles in ordinary rooms; temporary lines cut into the floor of the desert. “
Since then, sculpture has ventured even wider, into realms such as crafts, gardens, and masquerades, all relatively unexplored in Krauss’s time by mainstream Western art. These exhibitions show the vast range of what sculpture can be today.
Visit these sculpture exhibitions on view during Art Week NYC, taking place November 11–14.
