Dating and relationship coach Anwar White is discussing how colorism, hair texture, and beauty standards may impact Black women’s dating experiences. During a conversation with theJasmineBrand founder @itsjasminebrand , White claimed that darker-skinned Black women face greater challenges when it comes to marriage. “When you look at the marriage rate for Black women, it is half of the marriage rate of any other racial group.” He continued, “When you break out, like, the different Black women that are getting married, lighter skin or biracial women have the same marriage rate as white women.” He added, “It is the… chocolate and darker skinned women that actually have the lowest rates of marriage.” White attributed the disparities to several factors. “There’s colorism and texturism and dating racism that I talk about in the book and how to kind of overcome that through dating strategies.” When Jasmine asked whether lighter-skinned and biracial women have an easier time dating because of colorism, White responded, “Correct. And texturism.” The conversation also turned to hair preferences among Black men. “You’ll hear a lot of Black men say, oh, I want my woman to have natural hair.” He continued, “No, they don’t. They want bust down weaves. They want long, long weaves.” White suggested that hair color, length, and texture can influence dating preferences, while acknowledging that his observations are generalizations.
