Ten years have passed since you came home from the hospital, Mom, after months of bravely battling cancer complications. You wanted nothing more than to be home, in the place you loved, to peacefully slip away from this earth. But before you rested, we had one last, perfect adventure.
Knowing your deep, lifelong passion for gardens, I took you to Dow Gardens in Midland, Michigan. Sitting in your wheelchair, you let me push you through that amazing sanctuary. The trees were alive with the most incredibly beautiful, vibrant, colorful leaves. It felt like the world had put on a brilliant show just for you.
On the way back, we stopped for apple pie. I remember the look on your face when you turned to me and said it was the most beautiful day, followed by those words I hold so close to my heart: “Love you, son.”
You were so tired, and as I looked at you, a profound sadness hit me because I knew my time with you was growing short and that I would miss you beyond words. But that day was pure magic. It remains the perfect memory of our bond—a final, beautiful gift we shared.
Ten years later, the colors of those leaves haven’t faded in my mind, and neither has my love for you.
Love you always, Mom.
