A band of pronghorn working through the autumn sagebrush near Red Rock Lakes, maybe 40 or 50 feet from the road, on our Centennial Valley loop in Montana this September. A few minutes earlier: a ranch horse in a golden pasture.

🇺🇸The 2026 US midterm elections could deliver a major political blow to Donald Trump.

Rising living costs, economic frustration, growing public anger over the billions of dollars in American taxpayer money sent to Netanyahu and Israel instead of being invested at home, the disastrous war against Iran and Washington’s complicity in the genocide in Gaza are fuelling mounting discontent.

A major source of this anger is the betrayal of Trump’s promise of « America First. »

Americans were promised that their money and their country’s interests would come first.

Instead, billions continue to flow to Israel while ordinary Americans struggle with the cost of living, healthcare and housing.

Many are asking: how can this be America First when public money is spent on Israel rather than invested in the United States?

But let’s not celebrate too soon. Trump’s electoral defeat will mean little if the political system behind these policies remains unchanged.

521 out of 533 members of Congress have received money from AIPAC. Let that sink in.

This raises fundamental questions about political independence, democratic accountability and the corrupting influence of money in Washington.

Politicians cannot hide behind lobbyists. They are elected officials who make decisions, approve military aid and provide diplomatic cover. They bear responsibility for their choices.

This is a bipartisan failure. Republicans and Democrats alike have repeatedly prioritised Israeli government interests over Palestinian lives, regional stability and the interests of ordinary Americans.

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris must also answer for their administration’s role in supplying weapons and diplomatic protection to Israel during the devastation of Gaza.

A Democratic victory cannot erase their responsibility.

The urgent priority must be to reclaim American democracy from the corrupting influence of money and powerful lobbies.

There must be laws that prohibit and criminalise corruption in public office, prevent the abuse of public funds and ensure that taxpayers’ money serves the American people, not foreign government interests.
