My only plans for Halloween this year now that piano practice is out of the way:
This year’s ofrenda for Day of the Dead also makes up because I skipped last year.
From left: Sonny Rollins, an early hero of mine on the saxophone whose album Saxophone Colossus was extremely influential on my young mind when I was discovering jazz. Brian Wilson, who passed last year as we were in the home stretch of working on BOORMAN. His influence over me is indescribable. Of course, there is my late father who passed on Halloween week in 2009. And lastly, Ed Roach, pictured with Dennis at some point in the 70s, someone from Dennis’ inner circle who I got to know a bit over the last year and passed in the Spring. He came out to the BOORMAN last September at the Aero and he told me he was chuffed that he was invited to the premiere of a newly anticipated film!
I hope he is at rest wherever he is.
I am not religious but I don’t believe in coincidence. I suppose if you grew up in a Mexican Catholic family we’re all this way to some degree. But this helps me feel closer to people I hardly knew and those who impacted me in the brief period in which I did get to know them in the hope that there is more to life than what we see in our day to day.
