Câmara (1909–1999) was a Brazilian Catholic archbishop who became famous for defending the poor and criticizing economic inequality.

He served as Archbishop of Olinda and Recife from 1964 to 1985, during Brazil's military dictatorship.

His argument was that society celebrated charity but often treated anyone who questioned the causes of poverty as a political threat.

In the late 1960s and 1970s, the Brazilian government accused him of communist sympathies, restricted his public appearances, and banned much of the national press from mentioning his name.

Despite this, he became internationally known as the "Bishop of the Poor" and received multiple Nobel Peace Prize nominations.

Don't mind them, Helder. They're just shortsighted rascals.

Walmart gives to the poor and simultaneously helps create the conditions which cause poverty in the first place

When I say theres a problem with todays economy, it isn't even a low wage, everything else is just so expensive for no reason other than profit and taxation. We used to murk kings for a 2% tax on beer, for crying out loud.

Yes, that's because you want to steal people's things and give scraps to the poor.

The Nobel Peace Prize committee takes the charity approach. Since they gave it to Obama just for winning an election (then going on to bomb countries etc, as all US presidents do), they lost a lot of credibility. PS: I love Obama as a politician, but he didn’t deserve that prize.

One is your money. The other is everybody else’s money. And you have no right to steal our money to salve your ego

@maisonpereira it is not godless to believe everyones needs should be met, his religion informed his political theory, same with almost every other world leader. why is his viewed as less legitimate than others?

@giovannaprimon Charity is not only good for the ego but it creates a sense of reliance on the ruling class to meet your needs. This is why mutual aid groups are co-opted and made illegal by the government. You have to be reliant on the government, once communities realize that they have the ability to support themselves, the illusion is gone.
