When raindrops hit water containing microplastics, they can eject tiny plastic particles into the air. In some laboratory experiments, a single droplet carried around 100 particles.
Professor Alfonso Arturo Castrejón-Pita, from Oxford’s Department of Engineering Science, explains why understanding how microplastics spread matters: “...understanding how they spread is hugely important if we are to track them and perhaps eventually contain them.”
The research, involving scientists from Oxford, UCL and the National Autonomous University of Mexico, reveals a possible route for microplastics to move from water into the atmosphere.
