Let me tell you how one little mistake turned into an unexpected family adventure! Buckle up. 😂🚗
We were at my daughter’s dance practice. Typically, my son hangs out in the car, and this day was no different. At some point, he decided to come inside and thought he’d turned the car off and locked the doors.
Fast-forward to us walking back to the car. SURPRISE! The car is still running, the doors are locked, and the key fob is disabled. 🫠
Thankfully, we had a full tank of gas, roadside assistance, and our dance mom family to keep us company. We missed my daughter’s last elementary school Trunk or Treat waiting for help (cue the sibling guilt 🥴), but we ended up having an impromptu dinner with friends. 🥰
Was it the plan? Absolutely not.
Did we make a mistake? Yep!
Did we learn something, laugh a little, and make an unexpected memory? You better believe it!
Here’s what life keeps teaching me: We all make mistakes. We learn from them, grow through them, and give ourselves and others, grace along the way.
This matters especially with young people. We have to create spaces where children can own their mistakes, take responsibility, learn, and do better without believing one bad decision defines who they are.
At The Starr Institute, we believe young people are more than their worst moments.
As the saying goes, “To make mistakes is human; to stumble is commonplace; to be able to laugh at yourself is maturity.”
Sometimes, the beautiful thing that comes from a mistake is the lesson. Sometimes, it’s the memory. Give yourself some grace and when someone else makes a mistake, try offering them the same grace you hope to receive. Accountability and compassion can absolutely coexist.
‼️A mistake is something you made. It is not all that you are.
