Cumberland Jack 19th-century private brass gaming counter or satirical token dated 1837

When Queen Victoria ascended to the British throne in 1837, Salic Law barred a female from ruling the German Kingdom of Hanover. [The Departure: The personal union between Great Britain and Hanover ended, and Victoria's unpopular uncle, Ernest Augustus (the Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale), left Britain to rule Hanover instead. Street-sellers and private minters produced these tokens for a penny to celebrate or mock his departure. Some designs even replaced the horseman on the reverse with a monkey on horseback to poke fun at the Duke.

Obverse: Features a portrait of a young Queen Victoria.

REVERSE: Featurgure on horseback (imitating the design of St. George slaying the dragon) with the inscription "TO HANOVER" and the year 1837
