She demanded repayment of an £8,000 loan from her adult son despite having savings of her own, but was she wrong for holding him to their agreement?

Imagine your own son gaslighting you

It was a LOAN, not a gift! The son agreed. Mom’s financial situation is exactly NONE of his business. Hold him to the agreement. He needed money; you helped him. I hope he keeps his word.

I dint think he had or has any intention of paying back this loan . It’s either write it off or go to small claims court to recover the money .

Your son is an entitled brat.

If I borrowed 50p from my mom as a child, she would take that 50p from next week’s pocket money. It’s made me VERY savvy with money.

I'd write it off and make sure my other children benefit more from my will. And tell your son that I won't be available to ask again.

He made a financial agreement and now wants to be selective about the terms. He thinks he can do what he likes just because it's his mum. What does her savings have to do with what is owed? Why is he pocket watching and being entitled. He sounds like he's always been a spoilt little 💩 and needs to be humbled about how real life and adulthood works.

Start adding interest and late payment fees.

I’m thinking that he’s getting mixed messages. You set up an official repayment plan but then let him off and didn’t mention it for a while. That sounds like you’re letting it go. Also, your husband is sending the message that he doesn’t have to repay. You’re in a tough spot. My father had seen some family loans go very wrong and taught us that if we HAVE to do business with family we should have an official sit down meeting and put the terms in writing with everyone signing. I’ve done the same. *He also said don’t lend family money that you can’t afford to live without.

Not at all wrong...what an entitled tosser, INSIST on the money being repaid ,otherwise what message are you sending him 🙄, also NEVER EVER lend him money again.

Personally i would insist in him paying you back then if you feel you can afford to give it back. I think it’s important to pay debt off. The son is entitled. I loaned my son £7k and we agreed a payment plan but he kept skipping payments I then found out he’d purchased a PS5 £500 (that’s how much he had left to pay)I was furious but because of that I’d never lend him money again.

I was lent money by my father, I had to pay back with interest!!! He agreed to pay it back, so he should.
