A company lost its ideal candidate by trying to save ₹13K a month, and the hiring manager says the decision backfired spectacularly.

According to the manager, the candidate had four years of experience, an impressive portfolio and an excellent interview. She asked for ₹65K, comfortably within the advertised salary range of ₹60K to ₹70K. But when the manager approached the boss for approval, he reportedly instructed her to offer just ₹52K, believing the candidate wanted the job badly enough to accept less.

The candidate immediately questioned why the offer was below the advertised minimum. The manager claims she was told to explain that the budget had changed, leaving her to deliver the excuse herself. After asking for 24 hours to consider the offer, the candidate declined the following morning.

The boss reportedly reacted angrily, describing her as unprofessional, money-minded and insufficiently passionate about the company. The manager, however, believed the company had brought the rejection upon itself by refusing to honour its own advertised range.

The company eventually hired someone else at ₹52K, but according to the account, that employee left within six months. The story has sparked discussions about employers who expect candidates to compromise on salary while demanding experience, skills and commitment.

The biggest hiring mistake wasn’t losing the candidate. It was assuming she would accept less simply because she wanted the job.

I interviewed for a job with the same government entity I had already worked in for 5 years. I knew all the players and was well networked into the broader community. The job was considerably more pressure and I would be managing a budget of 7 figures. The job posting was a huge range. So I broke the range in thirds and let them know in interview that I was asking for the mid to top of the second tier. I beat out over 100 candidates for that position. HR made the mistake of offering me the bottom of the first tier. There was no negotiation-I simply turned it down and walked away. Even if they had given me anywhere near what I wanted-I was now going to have less psychological advantage. I would approach the position as a very resentful poser. I knew my worth. HR-do better.

I lived this my entire career with a boss who never should have been the boss. He hired one incompetent employee after another.

"Boss math: Post 60-70k, offer 52k, call HER money-hungry 😂 That girl did everything right — asked for 24 hours, declined politely. And he hired a guy for 52k who left in 6 months. Play stupid games, win stupid turnover. If you're tired of this game, HireTwist handles your job search end-to-end. We find roles that actually pay the posted budget, we customize every app, we track your pipeline 24/7. So you can have the power to decline."
