US presidents have been beaten badly in previous midterm elections, from the 'thumping' of George W Bush in 2006 to the 'shellacking' of Barack Obama in 2010.

But the humbling of Trump and his Republican Party in 2026 was in a category of its own — a savage rejection from across the country of the president, his allies and his second-term agenda.

President Donald Trump agreed Wednesday with Vice President JD Vance that the Iran war contributed to Republicans’ midterm losses, but said he would make the same decision again.

“I think it’s largely true,” Trump said, pointing to a short-term rise in gasoline prices. He defended the war as necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

Earlier Wednesday, Vance wrote on X, “The reason we lost is the war,” after Democrats won control of the House and Senate.

Vance said many voters who backed the Trump-Vance ticket in 2024 showed up but voted for Democrats. Citing an unnamed pollster, he said those voters wanted the war ended, action on living costs and inflation, an “America First” focus and changes to the U.S. relationship with Israel.

Vance’s post came before Trump’s Wednesday remarks, though Trump had also acknowledged Tuesday night that Iran contributed to the losses while defending his decision to launch the war.

This win is the work of thousands of Montanans who are sick of a politics that puts working people last, and who are ready to send one of our own to Washington to make it work for us.

I want to thank my team, and all our supporters and volunteers who put their time, trust, and heart into this campaign. I also want to thank Aaron Flint and his family for running. Deep as our disagreements may be, democracy is about showing up, and I respect his willingness to enter this race. To all the Montanans who voted for Aaron - I’ll be fighting for you, too.

To everyone who made this win happen - thank you. I promise to keep showing up, listening, and fighting for a future where every Montanan can work one good job and afford the basics, and where our wild places are protected for the Montanans who come next.

Let’s show the country that true courage contains compassion, that we are so much stronger together, and that we’re ready to bend the course of this country for the better like so many Montanans have done before.

So tonight, let’s celebrate the example we’ve set for the rest of the country of what working people can do together. Tomorrow, let’s get to work doing something with it.

Happiest when I’m in completely oversized clothes 🤌🏻❤️
