In 2025, ski mountaineer @jimwmorrison made history as the first person to climb and ski down Mount Everest’s North Face via the so-called Super Direct route. It was an accomplishment he’d initially hoped to achieve with his partner, ski mountaineer and National Geographic Explorer Hilaree Nelson.

Joined by his friend, award-winning filmmaker and National Geographic Explorer @jimmychin, the historic ski has been turned into a documentary, directed by Chin and @chaivasarhelyi. Ahead of the film’s premiere, Nat Geo spoke to Morrison about how he turned a lifetime of tragedy into triumph.

Mount Everest has been skied a few times before, usually via the South Col route, which is also the way most mountaineers climb the mountain. But until last year, no one had successfully descended the north face’s Super Direct, which drops 9,000 steep and icy feet from the summit to the Rongbuk Glacier below.
