ICE killed a Texas father of three by denying him life-saving medications for four months inside an ICE concentration camp.
ㅤ
Emiliano Andrade-Covarrubias, 56, spent his entire adult life in the US after he came to the country as a teenager.
ㅤ
He raised three children in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where he lived for decades.
ㅤ
Andrade-Covarrubias was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother from Hidalgo, Mexico, and a man of Catholic faith.
ㅤ
He painted apartments and townhomes for a living and traveled to Mexico often to work on a house he was building.
ㅤ
He had no problem traveling to and from the US as a permanent resident until June, when ICE abducted him.
ㅤ
Even though he was a lawful permanent resident, ICE detained him for months without due process.
ㅤ
For the last four months of his life, ICE held him captive at the Rio Grande Processing Center (operated by GEO Group) in Laredo, TX.
ㅤ
During those months, he endured extreme medical neglect that eventually took his life on Oct 17.
ㅤ
ICE and GEO Group are directly responsible for his preventable death. Their refusal to provide life-saving medications and care led to the death of a father who entered ICE captivity with no acute threats to his health.
ㅤ
For months, he received no medication for life-threatening conditions including diabetes, hypertension, high blood pressure, and a heart condition.
ㅤ
These health conditions were only exacerbated after he was hospitalized in 2021 for Covid-19, yet GEO Group completely ignored his concerns about the lack of medical care.
ㅤ
After four months of unconstitutional detainment and medical neglect, “He didn’t look like himself,” said his daughter, Estefani Andrade after speaking to him over video. He looked pale and unwell.
ㅤ
“He was coughing. I asked if he was OK. He said, ‘they don’t listen to me.’”
ㅤ
Andrade-Covarrubias was the 7th person to die in ICE custody in Texas this year, and the second person ICE killed through medical neglect in Laredo.
ㅤ
Alarmingly, there’s no record of him on ICE’s ‘Detainee Deaths’ page.
