Before Blade Runner, there was Tokyo.

In 1976, Canadian photographer Greg Girard arrived in the Japanese capital for what was meant to be a brief stopover. Captivated by the neon-lit streets of Shinjuku, he wandered through the night and decided by morning to stay.

What followed was a half-century spent documenting Asia’s changing urban landscapes, from the labyrinthine corridors of Hong Kong‘s Kowloon Walled City to the disappearing neighbourhoods of Shanghai, capturing the lives, spaces and fleeting moments that might otherwise have been lost to time.

As his first career retrospective marks 50 years behind the lens, Girard speaks to Another Man China about the cities that shaped his vision, the photographs that got away, and a lifetime spent witnessing the world transform.
