your gate chops the vocal into stutters? turn up Return.
when a quiet phrase hovers right around Threshold, the gate opens and closes over and over. that's chatter. Return sets how far below Threshold the signal has to fall before the gate closes again.
with Threshold at -36 and Return at 6, it opens at -36 and waits until -42 to close. 4 to 8 db of Return stops chatter on most material.
