Michael Jordan’s legendary “Air Jordan” dunk came during the 1988 NBA Slam Dunk Contest in Chicago. Facing Dominique Wilkins in the final, Jordan needed a huge score on his last attempt, so he ran the length of the court, took off from around the free-throw line, and threw down one of basketball’s most iconic dunks.

The judges gave him a perfect 50, allowing him to edge Wilkins 147–145 and win his second straight Slam Dunk Contest. Jordan later said Julius “Dr. J” Erving, who was watching from the stands, encouraged him to go all the way back and take off from the free-throw line.
