Not all languages are known to be related, although thousands belong to the same language families. For example, English, Spanish, Hindi, and Russian all belong to the Indo-European language family, meaning they evolved from a common ancestral language spoken thousands of years ago. Linguists identify these relationships by comparing vocabulary, grammar, and patterns of sound changes.
Interestingly, scientists don’t know whether every language ultimately descended from one original human language. Languages change so dramatically over thousands of years that evidence of ancient relationships eventually disappears. Some languages, such as Basque, are considered language isolates because no relationship to another surviving language has been convincingly demonstrated. It’s possible that all languages share a distant ancestor, but we currently have no way to prove it.
