The Watches of The Terminal List - True Believer (link in bio)

At W.O.E., we don’t watch much TV and don’t care much for Hollywood. That said, we are big fans of Jack Carr, and our whole team binge-watched the latest season of The Terminal List when it dropped last week. 

As always, Jack, the team, and the propmaster packed the show with great watches. This week’s Dispatch is a full download on all of the great timepieces from the new season of The Terminal List, from Rolex to Seiko to Roamer and more.

From a SEAL-founded microbrand on Reece’s wrist to a returning favorite on Mo Farooq to one of the deepest cuts we’ve seen in Hollywood, nearly every character has a watch that tells you something about them. And by the finale, one vintage watch plays a bigger role than anyone might expect…

I spotted that and paused it, told my wife "thats my watch" and showed her my Resco Black Frog. She was not as excited as I was to see it on the show. 😂

This is W.O.E. and Jack Carr in front of the Naked Warrior statue, which honors the UDT and Second World War combat swimmers who pioneered what would become the modern Navy SEALs. I’m wearing a PVD-Tudor FXD and Jack a vintage Tudor Sub 7928. I spent the past few days conducting 6 video interviews with SEALs and UDT frogmen to document the history of Tudor and NSW. The older frogmen discussed using their Tudors Subs during the Vietnam War, Apollo recovery operations and timing fuses. The newer generation wear Tudors to honor that heritage. We were also able to access the archives of both Tudor and the Navy SEAL Museum to piece together the first order of Tudor Subs shortly after the establishment of SEAL Teams ONE and TWO. This is going to be a great piece of content. I hope you enjoy it, but more importantly, I hope the men I spoke with and their families feel that it honors their legacy. That is a responsibility I don’t take lightly. It’s going to take some time to piece everything together. British Army issuing Casio F91Ws to new recruits. Ally.

Last month, the British Army announced that new recruits will receive a welcome pack containing a notebook, a pen, a letter of congratulations, and a Casio F91W.

The British MoD may have the most compelling history of issued watches of any military, from the Dirty Dozen to the Rolex MilSub, the W10, the Omega Seamaster 300, CWC, and Elliot Brown. Today, outside of the CWC SBS and the Elliot Brown Holton, which are still issued to select special operations and diving units, most of the force relies on Digital Tool Watches from Suunto, Garmin, and Casio.

At around 20 doll hairs, the F91W is just as iconic as the Rolex Sub, and has probably been used on both sides of every major conflict since the early 1990s. Pre-9/11, AQ reportedly handed out F91Ws to new recruits at its training camps… so the British Army is not really the first to put one in the welcome pack… According to the article, 2,900 recruits have already received the watches. SEAL Team Six Tudor Pelagos FXD unit watch on the wrist of Medal of Honor recipient Master Chief Ed Byers during Savannah Bananas game. (A sentence I never thought I would write, but ally.) Byers received the Medal of Honor for a December 2012 hostage rescue in Afghanistan, where he shielded American hostage Dr. Dilip Joseph with his own body while restraining an enemy guard with his bare hands. Across 11 overseas deployments and nine combat tours, he also earned five Bronze Stars with Valor and two Purple Hearts. The watch is the Gold Squadron variant, which, in contrast to the commercially available version, has a simpler “two-line” dial with “PELAGOS” executed in gold and “660 ft”. Most visibly, the hook and loop strap has a “gold” center stripe, in contrast to the regular red stripe. Each SEAL Team Six assault squadron has its own version integrating its distinguishing color and insignia on the caseback. Your Apple Watch & the Surveillance Economy (Dispatch Live)

This week in the W.O.E. Dispatch, we look at the new Apple Watch Audio Intelligence features and the commercial surveillance economy watching all of us. Last month, Apple announced Live Rewind and Siri Recap, two opt-in features that continuously listen to ambient audio and can generate summaries of your conversations. In contrast to our past discussions on smartwatches, this is a marketed feature, not a leaked vulnerability. We have officially arrived in a post-privacy world. As we discuss this week, the smartwatch is just one vector. Flock cameras log billions of plate scans a month, Strava has exposed military bases and the people on them, and data brokers repackage your location data and sell it many times over. I discuss my firsthand experience interviewing at one of these companies, and how Iran is using this information today against our forces overseas. The CIA and FBI (probably) aren’t watching you, but big corporations definitely are, and that data is for sale to anyone who is willing to pay, foreign or domestic. A CIA Officer, $40M in Gold Bars, Rolex and a Breitling? (Link in bio)

If you’ve been anywhere near the news, you have likely heard of David Rush, the CIA officer arrested earlier this year after the FBI seized $40M in gold bars, $2M in cash, and 35 luxury watches from his Virginia home.  This week, I share a few thoughts on Rush’s unbelievable story, from his fictitious background as a Navy pilot to his also made-up “special access program” and a Rolex Sea-Dweller mentioned in court documents.  Of particular interest, I have heard through the grapevine that he wore a Breitling, which actually makes sense if you are trying to fool others that you were a pilot.  This is easily the most prolific case of fraud in CIA’s history, and it’s all the more interesting to me that watches played one if not several roles in the larger than life events.  Full story on the site.  -W.O.E.
